Nelson always knows how to do Christmas properly. Sunshine, music, markets, parades, and a whole heap of community spirit. This year is shaping up to be another cracker — with old favourites returning and a few fresh twists along the way.
Here’s your guide to the region’s biggest festive moments. Pop them in the calendar, grab the whānau, and get ready for a month of sparkle.
The Christmas Tree Lighting
The festive season officially begins with the Nelson Christmas Tree lighting on the Cathedral steps on Sunday, 23 November at 7pm. The switch-on marks the official start of Christmas in Nelson, and I’m sure we’ll hear a tune or two from Nelson Brass to get the Christmas spirit flowing.
Markets & Shopping: Handmade Treasures
The Great Christmas Market at Founders Heritage Park on Sunday, 23 November (9am–4pm) launches the shopping season with over 100 local artisan and boutique makers. This year marks the 13th year of the event. Entry is $2 (free for under-12s), and the historic village setting provides the perfect backdrop for browsing unique, handmade gifts. Bring cash, as many stallholders don’t accept card payments. And pack large shopping bags.
If you prefer a more rural setting, Beacon Hill Vintage Christmas Market on Saturday, 15 November (10am–3pm) offers vintage finds, antiques, and handmade treasures in a countryside atmosphere.
The Cathedral Christmas Tree Festival
The Nelson Cathedral Christmas Tree Festival officially opens on 27 November and runs through 17 January 2026. Over 70 beautifully decorated trees — crafted by local businesses, schools, community groups, and organisations — fill the Cathedral with colour and creativity.
The festival opens with the Light Up Service on 26 November at 6pm, a reflective and joyful occasion featuring live music and readings. This is your first chance to see the decorated trees and experience the festive atmosphere.
Throughout December, the Cathedral hosts free weekday lunchtime concerts at 1pm (Monday to Friday), featuring local musicians. For evening visits, the Cathedral stays open until 9pm on three Fridays: 5, 12, and 19 December. Visitors can vote for their favourite trees throughout the festival period.
The Parades: Colour, Music & Christmas Cheer
The NBS Nelson Santa Parade rolls through the city centre on Sunday, 30 November at 1pm, departing from Montgomery Square and travelling down Trafalgar Street before finishing at Trafalgar Park. Expect hundreds of performers, around 50 imaginative floats, stilt walkers, live bands, and of course Santa himself.
A week later, Richmond celebrates with its own parade on Sunday, 7 December (12:30pm entertainment, 1pm parade start). The Quail Valley Free Range Richmond Santa Parade departs from Edward Street, travels down Queen Street, and concludes at Sundial Square, where Santa meets families and entertainment continues.
Live Music & Theatre: Festive Entertainment
A Cathedral Christmas brings together NBS Nelson City Brass and the Nelson Cathedral Choir for two unforgettable concerts under the direction of Nigel Weeks. Performances are on Saturday, 6 December at 7pm and Sunday, 7 December at 2pm at Nelson Cathedral. These concerts feature traditional carols, stunning solos, and the Cathedral’s acoustic setting. They consistently sell out, so booking early is recommended.
For family entertainment, The Greatest Christmas Show at Theatre Royal Nelson on Monday, 8 December at 7pm delivers festive magic with soaring vocals, incredible dancers, jaw-dropping cirque aerial acts, and a special visit from Santa.
Community Markets & More
Country Christmas Market at Moutere Hills Community Centre on Saturday, 6 December (10:30am–3pm) provides a relaxed shopping experience. Local artisans showcase handmade crafts, jewellery, plants, candles, and produce, with food and drink available on-site.
Community Celebrations: Food, Carols & Connection
Christmas in the Park / Afterglow at Washbourn Gardens, Richmond on Saturday, 13 December (6pm–10pm) invites families to bring blankets and picnics to enjoy live music, carols, and Santa’s visit. As the main programme concludes, Afterglow takes over which is a DJ-led youth dance party with glow lights for teens and young adults.
Carols in the Park will be at Brightwater Recreation Reserve, on Sunday, 14 December (5pm–7pm). There will of course be music and carols. Plus there will be bouncy castles and face painting for kids. With BBQ food and Santa making for a great outdoor family-friendly event for all. With a backup of the Brightwater Public Hall should rain pay a visit.
On Christmas Eve (24 December) at 8:45pm, the hugely popular Carols on the Steps takes place at Nelson Cathedral’s steps on Trafalgar Street. This candlelit singalong is led by local musicians and the Cathedral choir, and offers a relaxed, community-focused way to mark the eve of Christmas Day. Bring a blanket, cushion or chair and the whole whānau for some serious happy Christmas vibes.
The Nelson Mayor’s Community Christmas Lunch at Beachside Conference Centre in Tāhunanui on Christmas Day from 11:30am welcomes anyone facing the prospect of spending the day alone. The free meal features traditional festive fare, Santa visits, and community warmth. Bookings are essential, and open from 1 December.
Giving Back: Trees of Remembrance
Nelson Airport’s Trees of Remembrance, displayed from late November through early January, transforms the terminal into a festive gallery supporting Nelson Tasman Hospice. Local businesses sponsor and decorate trees, with Dame Suzie Moncrieff selecting the Overall Winner and the public voting for People’s Choice. Young travellers can enjoy the Great Bauble Hunt, searching for hidden decorations throughout the terminal for the chance to win prizes.
